John Rust demonstrates a prototype at the New Llano Cooperative in Louisiana. The photograph, provided by his daughter Mary Agnes, was likely taken in 1930.

On the back of the photograph, John Rust addressed his son, Jackie: “Son this is the machine Daddy has been working on all the time since he saw (you) last. Someday, maybe another year, Daddy will be able to give you the medical care you need so much.”
John Daniel “Jackie” Rust Jr., who was born with spina bifida, succumbed to pneumonia in 1934. He was 10.
